5 Ways To Live a More Eco-Friendly Lifestyle

Living a more eco-friendly lifestyle starts with us as individuals. Let’s dive into why we should all work towards a zero-waste lifestyle and 5 easy ways you can reduce your environmental impact.

What is the purpose of a zero-waste lifestyle?

With a global population of 7.9 billion, there is an unbelievable amount of waste ending up in our land and oceans, polluting our environment and impacting the lives of animals within it. The zero-waste movement is designed to combat the issue of waste and is fast gaining popularity.

By focusing on minimising the amount of waste we produce on a daily basis and educating those around us along the way, we can lead a more eco-friendly lifestyle and change our world for the better.

5 ways to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle

1. Reduce, reuse, recycle

Every product we purchase has an environmental footprint. When you’re considering a purchase, first ask yourself:

  • Is this something I need?
  • Can I reuse it?
  • Can I recycle it at the end of its lifetime?

It sounds simple enough but does take a lot of conscious effort.

A good starting point is by eliminating single-use items. When it comes to your daily coffee, avoid plastic takeaway coffee cups and straws and opt for reusable glassware. When it comes to clothing, you should pay close attention to the materials used and whether they are made to last and are recyclable.

2. Avoid food waste

The more food we consume, the more demand we create for our farmers, and the more waste we end up contributing to. You can work towards zero waste living by reducing your food wastage.

Here are a few simple ways:

  • Make a shopping list and stick to it.
  • Buy more fresh food that doesn’t require as much packaging. You might like to do your weekly shop at your local markets and take along a reusable tote.
  • Spend time meal prepping and freeze meals for later.
  • Get creative with your cooking. Think of ways you can use your leftover groceries to make a crafty meal.

You’ll be surprised by how just a few small changes can drastically reduce your food and packaging waste.

3. Choose sustainable modes of transportation

While many of us enjoy the luxury of driving a car, if you can make the journey by foot, bike or public transport, these are more environmentally friendly options. If these modes are not available for you, combining your errand runs to take fewer trips or carpooling with friends, colleagues, and family can help to reduce our carbon footprint.

By making conscious efforts to purchase goods that reduce your environmental impact, you are well on your way to living a more eco-friendly lifestyle

4. Avoid fast fashion

One of the biggest enemies of wastefulness is fast fashion. In fact, 6,000kg of textile waste is being disposed of in Australia every 10 minutes. It’s so important that we all make a conscious effort to reduce our footprint and shop mindfully.

Do your research, and look at the materials they’re using.

  • Are they choosing bamboo over cotton?
  • Are their styles timeless, or are they just following seasonal trends?
  • Are they made to last, or will they damage after a few wears?

Collectively, we can vote with our wallets and support brands doing good for our planet.

5. Become an advocate

Only as a collective can we make the major difference required for the good of our planet. Get your friends, family and workplace on board by advocating for ride-to-work days and suggesting more eco-conscious consumption where you can. By joining forces and acting as an advocate for a more eco-friendly lifestyle, you can be the change you want to see.
